I’ve been needing to find a few last clean swaps for my own makeup routine, so I figured now was a great time to do a complete round-up of all my fave clean and toxin free swaps in this broad category! If you missed the last post containing my favorite “Facial Care Swaps”, you may want to start there before moving on.
Why should I use clean makeup?
I know that I continue to say that our skin is our body’s largest organ… but it is true. We absorb chemicals through our skin and then directly into our bloodstream. These toxins can also be passed onto those we hold or love on as well. What we put on our skin absolutely matters and it matters greatly.
Continually using the same ingredients on our skin every day just adds to our body’s toxic burden and increases it to points that can cause many health issues like cancer, reproductive problems, irritation to our lungs, and skin, and headaches. They can also disrupt our endocrine system which can cause a long list of health issues.
So many conventional brands contain harmful ingredients in them. Many times they end up hidden and are listed under “fragrance” or “parfum”
Common toxins found in makeup
The list of ingredients to avoid is lengthy… but here are the main culprits of toxins that are a no-go in our home for a makeup routine:
- Formaldehyde
- Fragrance
- Perfume
- Parabens (like Butyl, Ethyl, and Propyl)
- Aluminum
- Triclosan
- Phenoxyethanol
- Carbon Black
- Coal Dyes
- Tar Dyes
- Phthalates (often found lumped into fragrance and perfumes.)
- Methlyisothiazolinone
- Methychloroisothiazolinone
- Ethanolamines
- Polyethylene Glycol or PEGS
- Propylene Glycol or PG’s
- Butylene Glycol or BG’s
- Toluene
- Siloxanes
- Talc
- Lake Dyes
- PFAS and PFCS
Now that we see what to steer clear of, let’s focus on what to use! We all need some good news these days and there is sooooooo much good news in makeup options that are clean and easily available to us all!
Concealer Swaps
Let’s start off with Concealers. Having a good creamy spot correction available after you moisturize is essential. Here are our faves along with a full list here on our website.
Foundation Swaps
Foundations… we have so many great options to share with you. I’m linking all of my faves for different coverage levels, powders, creams and such here. But I’m also going to share some of my favorites for my skin here in this article too.
Powder Swaps
Next we have Powders… whether you’re looking for a tinted powder, highlighting powder, or a finishing powder, we have that all linked here too!
Clean moisturizers
A good base color can also be established with a tinted moisturizer or BB Cream. Our faves are here for you to check out!
Primer Swaps
I love this list of primers, and I think you will too… or go here to see them all listed on our site!
Now, onto all the colored makeup items. This is where it gets a bit harder to find the clean/ toxin free items. The cosmetic industry uses so many dyes in these products. Lake Dyes specifically are petroleum based and can contain carcinogens. Even so, we’ve found so many great options and are listing them by category here and of course they are ALL linked on our website here for you as well!

I love everything else I have from Toups and Co., so I am guessing this will be the same with the lipstick!
