Simple Swaps for All Purpose Cleaners

All Purpose Cleaners are cleansers that should do just that… clean any surface for any purpose. If you are cleaning countertops that hands and food will touch then you need to make sure that your cleaning products are in fact “CLEAN”!

Be careful to buy into “Greenwashing”, which is when companies appear to be non-toxic through their marketing campaigns, and labels. Companies like Mrs. Meyers, Seventh Generation and Method are prime examples of “Greenwashing” and oftentimes these companies still have some harmful ingredients in them.

Once you decide to switch to a non-toxic all purpose cleaner, you will begin eliminating toxins that you are not only touching and absorbing through your skin, but also inhaling.

Companies like Mrs. Meyers, Seventh Generation and Method are prime examples of “Greenwashing” and oftentimes these companies still have some harmful ingredients in them.

Our family has primarily used dōTERRA On Guard cleanser for the last 8-ish years now and love it. We also use Puracy’s All Purpose Cleanser. Both are in our top picks and I can’t really say that one is better than the other. We use these cleansers as well as some baking soda and white vinegar if we need to have a more abrasive scrubbing option or the vinegar and baking soda to remove any urine from pets or humans.

The regulations for cleaning products are not like those for foods and cosmetics. In food and cosmetics all ingredients have to be legally disclosed. But for cleaning products they do NOT have to list all the ingredients. There are a number of very harmful toxins in these products: When “Fragrance” is listed as an ingredient, it can contain a combination of up to 3,000 different chemicals. There are also toxins in all the Fillers, Dyes, Formaldehyde, Isopropanol, Phthalates, Thickeners, Ammonia, Chlorine, Isopropanol… I’m sure you get the picture! These ingredients can cause cancer, hormone disruption, they are neurotoxins  that can cause damage to the brain and nervous system. They can cause low sperm count, increased rates of male birth defects, estrogen-sensitive breast cancer cells to multiply, and increased rates of some cancers.

That’s enough for me to skip the toxic ingredients and find clean or at least cleaner options for our family!  But, if you’d like to read more, I’ll link the article I am referencing here.
